Το Όσκαρ Καλύτερης Σκηνοθεσίας παρουσίασε ο Μπονγκ-Τζουν Χο, νικητής πριν ένα χρόνο με το Parasite. Το Όσκαρ Καλύτερης Σκηνοθεσίας παρέλαβε η Κλόε Ζάο, μια σκηνοθέτιδα που ακολούθησε τα χνάρια του Κορεάτη.
Ένας Νοτιοκορεάτης που σάρωσε πέρσι, παρέδιδε το βραβείο σε μια Κινέζα που σάρωσε φέτος. Ο πιο ισχυρός συμβολισμός της φετινής απονομής των Όσκαρ ήρθε σχετικά νωρίς και πρόκρινε το πώς θα ολοκληρωθεί η διαδικασία βράβευσης, αφού το Nomadland της Κλόε Ζάο αναδείχθηκε η Καλύτερη Ταινία της Χρονιάς και η Φράνσις ΜακΝτόρμαντ πήρε το Ά Γυναικείο για τρίτη φορά στην καριέρα της και έπιασε την Όντρι Χέπμπορν σε αυτή την ξεχωριστή λίστα.
Τα 3 Όσκαρ του Nomadland ήταν και το ταβάνι φέτος, με τις ταινίες Sound of Metal, Soul, Mank, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, The Father και Judas and the Black Messiah να έχουν από 2 Όσκαρ. Στο 1 Όσκαρ έμειναν τα Promising Young Woman και Minari από τις 8 υποψήφιες ταινίες, όμως η έκπληξη ήταν τα μηδέν βραβεία που πήρε το Trial of The Chicago 7!
